Title-chasing Comets too strong for Tigers

- BY STEVE TAYLOR

DUNDEE Tigers went down 9-4 to city rivals Dundee Comets at Dundee Ice Arena on Saturday night.

The “visitors” dominated the first period, racing to a four-goal lead before the Tigers pegged things back to just a 5-4 deficit with 20 minutes remaining.

The final session went the way of the Comets, however, as last year’s Play-off and Scottish Cup winners ran out comfortable victors in the final derby of the SNL season.

Speaking after the game, Tigers Ian Carstairs said: “We started slowly and found ourselves in a bit of a hole early on.

“The guys showed a lot of character to pull things back in the second period, though, and we played some nice hockey to make sure we were still in the game with the final 20 minutes to play.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep up the intensity and took a couple of silly penalties in the third period, which allowed the Comets find their flow again.

“We can take a lot of positives from the game and competed well through 40 minutes of hockey but we did give up some cheap goals and need to keep our discipline when we’re in a position of opportunity.

“We head to North Ayr on Saturday in a game that we must win, so we’ll be working hard in training this week to make sure we’re as well prepared as we possibly can.”

Comets, meanwhile, have moved to within a point of league leaders Kestrels after the Kirkcaldy side slipped to a 10-8 defeat to Edinburgh Capitals SNL.

Comets assistant coach John Gordon said: “The results at the weekend have opened up the title race and we are right back in the thick of it with some huge games ahead of us.”

Comets are in cup action away to Kilmarnock Storm this Saturday.

Elsewhere, Dundee Stars U/16 lost 6-2 to Fife at the DIA on Saturday but bounced back the following day with a 10-3 win over visitors Kilmarnock.

Luca de Simone picked up Dundee’s Man-of-the-Match award against the Kirkcaldy side, with Gary Kelly earning the accolade on Sunday.
