Dundee West heading in the right direction
DUNDEE West FC recently held a signing day for all their girls at Charlotte Street.
Over 60 youngsters, from as young as five, came along for the day with their families to put pen to paper to play in the royal blue and red.
The day was rounded up with a squad photo with all the different age groups which consist of U/9, U/11, U/13, U/15 and their adult club, Dundee City Ladies.
Over the last 18 months, the club have worked alongside partners the Scottish FA and Active Schools to grow their girls section and establish a pathway for players in the north-west of Dundee to have an opportunity to play.
This has been evident with the huge growth at the younger age groups with the delivery of girls only school activities and Soccer Centres that have supported girls making the transition from school programmes into the local football club.
The Scottish FA have contributed to this, supporting the Legacy club to create a part-time staff member to work in partnership with local schools and create chances for girls to play football.
Club Development Officer Tam McCabe said: “Over the last few years we have gone from having only a few players to now having around 60-plus girls representing the club.
“We take huge pride in providing girls in the local area with the chance to come and play football and the support from the Scottish FA to make this happen has been fantastic.
“They have continued to support clubs all across the East Region with girls sections by setting up local girls only festivals to allow these youngsters to all come together and take part in small sided games.”
Furthermore, the club have established a brand new U/15 team that will be represented in the 2018-19 Scottish Women’s Football season.
The club’s ambition is to continue growing and eventually have an U/17 team that will enable the club to have a full player pathway from U/9 to Dundee City Ladies.
