Trustees being sought for new bereavement service
Now Dundee Funeral Support Service is seeking trustees for its new funeral advice and brokerage service.
The potential new scheme comes following the news that 20 paupers’ funerals are held on average in Dundee every year.
Jacky Close, of Faith i n the Community, said that over the past year they had worked with the Funeral Poverty Action Group to find a way to change things in the city.
She said: “One of our potential new initiatives is Dundee Funeral Support Service, a one-stop shop funeral advice service to be accessed at point of bereavement.
“The aim of this service is to reduce the cost of funerals for people at their most vulnerable.”
Jacky said that at an average cost of £3,833, funerals in Dundee are the most expensive in Scotland.
She said: “We need a change of direction in how people approach funerals.
“People across the board can face funeral poverty and we need to get them to consider various options.”
Diane Cameron, business developer of the Funeral Poverty Action Group, said: “We want to set up a one-stop shop service.
“We also want to create affordable financial options and increase communication to encourage funeral planning.”
Diane said the the average costs of a burial plot in Dundee is £1,304. Internment costs £545, while a cremation costs £1,070.
A spokesman for Funeral Poverty Action Group said: “We want to set up a social enterprise that will reduce the cost of funerals for people at their most vulnerable and to build a service offering dedicated support at the time of bereavement.”
