Sporting gesture a ‘great example’

-

DUNDEE Tigers slipped to a 3-1 away defeat to third-placed Aberdeen Lynx on Saturday night in a match which was filled with controversy and ended with a fantastic sporting gesture.

In a game that could have gone either way, Tigers had a goal disallowed in the first period but grabbed the equaliser when Callum Turnbull found the net in the second stanza.

The home side had a goal awarded in the final period despite protests it had hit the post.

After the game, Tigers Ian Carstairs said “We feel like this was a bit of a missed opportunity.

“We didn’t play our best hockey but we created plenty of chances, particularly in the second period, but just couldn’t add to our single goal.

“We’d had a goal washed out in the first period which appeared to hit the back of the net before rebounding out and we felt a bit hard done by then.

“When the Lynx second goal was awarded there were definitely question marks over whether or not that had crossed the line. If those decisions had gone for us we would have been looking at a different scoreline.

“We competed well in a game against a topfour team, though, and we’ll take some positives in to our final three league games.

“We’d like to thank the Aberdeen Lynx organisation and their fans for their fund raising efforts on Saturday night.

“The club donated the takings from their ‘Shirt Off Their Back’ raffle, which was over £600, to the family of our former player Mark Leggatt, who passed away last month, for gifting to charity.

“It was a fantastic gesture from the Lynx and a great example of the strength of the Scottish ice hockey community.”

Tigers next game is at Dundee Ice Arena against Solway Stingrays this Saturday (f/o 7.30pm).
