Probe launched after huge blaze

POLICE have launched an investigation after a “significant” blaze gutted a warehouse.

About 20 firefighters fought for more than two hours to bring the outbreak at Dundee’s West Gourdie Industrial Estate under control.

The fire, which is being treated by police as suspicious, broke out in a warehouse on Nobel Road just before 11pm yesterday and a security guard alerted emergency services.

The building belongs to Faztech International, which is owned by Bashir Chohan, the leader of Dundee’s Islamic society.

Mr Chohan told the Tele today he was shocked and upset at the damage and believed it was started deliberately.

He said there had been recent problems with vandalism and people breaking into windows at the site.

He added: “We are very upset and shocked. We just want to get to the bottom of this and find out what happened. “The police have told us today that there will be an investigation — this is very upsetting for us.

“The police won’t let us in the building to assess and survey the damage.

“Until we get inside, we won’t know the full extent of the damage caused, but it could run into thousands of pounds.”

Mr Chohan said his son, who received a call from the police around 11pm, arrived at the site to see thick black smoke billowing everywhere. His son stayed at the scene until the early hours of the morning.

Faztech imports ink cartridges from China and stores them in the warehouse.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service described it as a “significant blaze”.

She said: “We received a call at 10.54pm. Four appliances, two from Macalpine Road and two from Blackness Road, went to the scene.

“They used a main jet, four safety jets and four sets of breathing apparatus to fight the fire.

“The blaze was brought under control by 1.33am.”

The spokeswoman said there were no casualties.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said the blaze was being treated as suspicious and that an investigation was under way to determine the cause.
