Mystery man ‘key’ to probe into death

- BY CIARAN SHANKS

A MYSTERY man could hold the key to solving the riddle over a Dundee pensioner’s death.

Police believe he might have seen what happened to 67-year-old John Ogston, who was found badly injured in the city’s Mains Road on New Year’s Day and died later in hospital.

It was initially thought he had been hit by a vehicle at the entrance to Bayne Square, before a female went to his aid.

But Detective Chief Inspector Iain Wales said that after reviewing more than 1,000 hours of CCTV footage, officers were convinced he was struck further along the road.

Police believe the woman turned back to walk past GJ’s bar before realising something had happened to Mr Ogston.

DCI Wales said CCTV footage also showed a man who “must have” walked past Mr Ogston.

He said: “He must have walked past John and the female. There’s nothing to suggest that person is involved at all, but that person might have seen what happened to John while the female had her back turned.”

DCI Wales added: “John’s funeral is on Friday this week. I’ve met his daughter on several occasions and she is understandably absolutely devastated at what’s happened to her dad.

“But what makes it even worse is that I can’t give her an answer right now as to exactly what’s happened. If this was you driving that car on that night, then you need to do the right thing for John’s family.”

DCI Wales said more than 200 witnesses had been traced, including a taxi driver police originally urged to come forward.

DCI Wales added: “From our initial investigation, it very much looked like John had probably been involved in a collision with a vehicle at the entrance to Bayne Square in the time his female companion had gone to get assistance for him.

“We’re now quite confident that is not the case. The only reason we’re now confident that’s not the case is from reviewing hours of CCTV footage, some of which is extremely poor quality and required enhancing. It’s certainly my belief that in the time the female acquaintance has turned and walked up the road, when her back has been to John, something has happened.

“The big question for myself is ‘where has that vehicle gone’ and that is something that we’re still working on.”
