Former Scotland manager at testimonial dinner

-

TWO of Scotland’s most decorated football coaches are to speak at a testimonial dinner for the manager of Forfar West End.

An evening with former Dundee United players Walter Smith and Archie Knox will be part of celebrations to mark Daryl McKenzie’s testimonial year.

Daryl has celebrated 11 years of service to Forfar West End and now manages the club.

The junior football club, which plays its home games at Strathmore Park, held a testimonial match last year featuring current and former players to mark Daryl’s 10 years of service.

Smith and Knox have amassed more than five decades in football management, including a successful partnership at Glasgow Rangers in the 1990s.

The dinner is on Saturday June 16, at Strathmore Hall, Forfar, with tickets starting at £40.

The event will be compered by journalist and radio pundit and Tam Cowan.

Smith played more than 100 times for Dundee United during two spells with the club before getting involved as a coach at Tannadice under manager Jim McLean.

The man from Lanark later went on to win 13 major trophies at Glasgow Rangers before moving south to manage Everton in the Premier League.

He was appointed Scotland manager in 2004, replacing Berti Vogts as manager, but failed to qualify for the 2006 world cup.

Walter returned to manage Glasgow Rangers in 2007 and helped the team reach the Uefa Cup Final for the first time in 36 years before he left the club in 2011.

In recent times Walter was linked with a return to management as the national coach before Alex McLeish took the role. For more information on tickets for the testimonial dinner, contact 07930 829247.
