Police appeal issued after Mercedes found burnt out
POLICE are investigating after a car was set alight in a Dundee park.
Fire crews were called out to tackle the blaze at Caird Park at around 3.15pm yesterday.
Police Scotland believes the fire was started deliberately and has launched an investigation.
Video footage showed small explosions from the fire within a car park.
The burnt-out car, a 57-plate Mercedes, remained at the scene today.
No injuries were reported by emergency services.
A hose reel and dry powder was used to extinguish the blaze.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue service said: “A call was made at 3.18pm on Sunday for Scottish Fire and Rescue service personnel to attend a report of a car on fire.
“The fire was extinguished using a hose reel jet and dry powder.
“One appliance was sent from the Kingsway and the area was made safe. “The stop call came in at 4.14pm.” A spokesman for the force said: “Police Scotland is appealing for information about an i ncident which happened at around 3.15pm yesterday in the small car park just off Forfar Road in Caird Park.
“The car, a 57-plate Mercedes, was set on fire within the car park.
“It was extinguished quite quickly by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, but the car was destroyed.”
“If you have any information that could assist our inquiries, please call 101, or speak with any police officer.
“Also, information can be given anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111.
“Our reference is incident 2558 of February 18.”
Hasith Rajitha, who was working in the area when he noticed the blaze, said: “Me and my work colleague saw the fire.
“We went to the bridge where we could see what was happening.
“I didn’t see any little explosions or anything like that.
“We watched it burn out, but the firefighters managed to deal with it pretty quickly.
“I would say that it lasted about 20 minutes.”
