Time to pull together to beat drugs

-

I’ll start by saying that I’m very proud of our city.

However, after watching Channel 4 News on Monday night, I’m ashamed.

For Dundee to have the highest death rate from drugs in Europe is disgraceful! Not just the UK but Europe! It’s all very well building the V&A and a super-duper sports centre, but if we don’t look after our citizens, where does that leave us?

Surely the time has come for Dundee City Council and the Scottish Government to work together to help people in need. Firstly let’s have a rehab centre locally. I’m sure it could be built within an empty factory on one of the industrial estates.

Next, support in the way of hostel-type of accommodation, or something similar, as well as support workers.

Finally, police involvement to catch the dealers.

Come on Dundee, we’re better than this!

IN Scotland our biggest export success is drink, by way of whisky.

We are also starting to get into the gin and craft beer markets, which could help the economy.

Our politicians, however, are putting up the price of drink with an unknown effect on our sales.

This could be disastrous for the economy.

If, as some of them believe, this could solve our drink problems, they are going into the unknown.

No one believes that putting up the price of drugs will solve our drugs’ problem, so why would it work for drink ?

Meanwhile, on Channel 4 News, it was revealed Scotland has the biggest drug problem in Europe — and that Dundee comes top of the list for this.

It has also been revealed that last month there were 12 suspected drug deaths in Dundee.

The Channel 4 programme showed a reporter helping some addicts find a place to sleep for the night.

This was interesting as some statistics published last week stated that Dundee did not have any people recorded as homeless !
