Public will get say on Kings redevelopment

- By CIARAN SHANKS

DUNDONIANS will get to have their say on plans to save an iconic theatre.

Three separate events will be held next month giving people the chance to share their views on proposals for the former King’s Theatre in Cowgate.

Members of the Dundee King’s Theatre Trust want to transform the historic building into a venue capable of hosting large performances and community events.

Richard Meiklejohn, convener of the trust, said the views of locals are crucial to the plans.

He said: “We’re going to be carrying out a community consultation in March.

“We want to carry out one for youths, middle ages and older ages.

“We’re looking to go through the schools and colleges, hold a public event where everyone can come to see what we’re doing and maybe a coffee morning for the older groups.

“It’s important that we engage with the community in terms of being able to get funding.”

In its heyday, the theatre played host to the likes of Cliff Richard and Sir Harry Lauder.

The trust considers the building an important architectural legacy of the city’s past as the only surviving large touring theatre in the city.

It was discovered in the 1990s that enough of the original structure, including the ceiling, remained intact and the theatre could be restored.

Since then, the building has changed ownership several times.

Mr Meiklejohn said: “I think we could be doing more in terms of engagement but anyone who we have spoken to thinks it’s fantastic. The building is still up for sale so we can still go in and take it over once we get the funding and sponsors on board.”

The specific times and dates of the consultation events are yet to be confirmed.
