Children’s protection campaign launched

- BY JON BRADY

THE head of a group that works to protect Dundee’s children says people need to be vigilant when it comes to the welfare of city kids.

A dedicated child protection helpline has been relaunched, which will allow locals to report any concerns they have.

It’s part of an awareness drive of child protection services in Dundee, which also sees the introduction of a new campaign, “If Not You, Who?”, to encourage people to report their concerns.

A new report on the work of the Dundee Child Protection Committee has also been published and will be reviewed by the council’s children and family services committee tonight.

The confidential service can be reached on 01382 307999.

Norma Ritchie, independent chairwoman of the Dundee Child Protection Committee, says residents who fear that children are at risk should not be anxious to report any concerns — no matter how small they may seem.

She said: “Getting things right for every child is everyone’s responsibility — and we’re just trying to make this as friendly as we can for everyone. We want people to know. If there are any concerns, tell us about it.”

Jane Martin, chief social work officer with Dundee City Council, said the campaign is about raising awareness of child protection and having confidence in reporting concerns.

She added: “What might be a small incident, put together with a lot of other information, may take on further significance.”
