Cup high replaced by lows in league
WHAT a difference a week can make in football.
Last week, Lochee United and Carnoustie were celebrating great Scottish Cup victories.
However, it was a different story on Saturday as both sides slumped to disappointing Super League defeats.
Lochee’s 3-2 home defeat from Sauchie was hard to take for their followers after dominating large parts of the game.
The match got off to an unfortunate start for the Bluebells when they lost keeper Mark Fotheringham after only five minutes with what looked like a bad knee injury. He was replaced by Mark Stewart.
The Bluebells took the lead in nine minutes when Craig Smith was fouled and Dougie Cameron netted from the spot.
Sauchie weren’t out of it, however, and the lively Connor Kelly twice went close before scoring the equaliser five minutes from half-time.
United regained the lead five minutes after the restart when Dougie Cameron scored his second direct from a corner.
The visitors kept battling away and were awarded a penalty in 62 minutes. Though Stewart saved the spot-kick, Kelly followed up to draw Sauchie level.
Lochee pressed forward in search of a winner in the closing stages with Grant Lawson going close. However, they were caught out with five minutes to go when Kelly squeezed home a cross to complete his hat-trick.
The Bluebells then had a Jamie Reid goal ruled out for offside. In the closing minutes, Sauchie were awarded another penalty but this time their effort went high over the bar.
There was also despair in the Carnoustie camp after they blew a two-goal lead at Camelon.
It couldn’t have started better for Alan McSkimming’s side after an own goal by Ryan Locke handed them the lead.
It looked like the Gowfers would again prove to be Camelon’s bogey side when Pat Martin made it two in 24 minutes.
Then it went wrong for the visitors. Lewis Small pulled one back, then Alan Sneddon levelled. Ryan Kane and Sneddon again scored. Steven Cook pulled one back but the Gowfers couldn’t get another.
