Dundee braced for

Residents advised to be patient amid snow

- BY AMY HALL

RESIDENTS have been urged to “be prepared, be careful and be patient” as Dundee braced itself for today’s snow.

Gritter crews were out across the city from 9pm last night and again today from 5am, with efforts to clear footways beginning at 6am.

The Siberian blast — dubbed the “Beast from the East” — is expected to grip the region for the next few days, with a yellow “be aware” warning for snow in place today.

However, the worst of the weather is set to hit Tayside on Wednesday, with an amber “be prepared” warning covering tomorrow and Thursday in anticipation of wide snow showers of 5-10 cm, or as much as 15-25 cm in some areas.

While the mercury will hang around 0C today, wind chill factor will mean it may feel as cold as -8C tonight and -9C tomorrow.

The freezing conditions are due to high pressure around Scandinavia, which is drawing in cold air from across northern Europe, including parts of Russia.

Mark Flynn, Dundee City Council’s depute convener of city development, said the local authority was ready to weather the storm.

He said: “As the snow approaches, I would urge you to be prepared, be careful and be patient. We have the gritters at the ready, the salt piles stocked and the team ready to tackle the Beast from the East.

“I’m sure you’ll have seen that treatment of the network has started and the crews will continue to treat the network over the coming days.

“Our aim is to help keep roads and footways as safe as possible during bad weather, and we constantly monitor conditions and forecasts.”
