Long-term strategy to tackle speeding

- By CIARAN SHANKS

COUNCIL bosses are planning a new long-term strategy to tackle speeding across the city.

It comes after the Tele recorded some drivers at twice the speed limit.

In just one hour, 51 people were found to be speeding at several locations, including near schools and on commuter roads.

Today, Dundee City Council’s community safety chief said talks were ongoing about new plans to improve road safety in the city.

Councillor Alan Ross, pictured, convener of the community safety and public protection committee, said: “We are having discussions with all our community safety partners about how we look at road safety in the city.

“Generally, we have a good record for road safety in Dundee.

“The figures are never a cause for too much concern but we can’t ever be complacent.

“I’m not aware of any particular hotspots but the new locality policing model is working. If any concerns are raised with me, I speak to the ward sergeant and the police deal with it. “We’ve had initiatives like the Pop-Up Jims and things like that. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the background where if we hear reports we’ll look at them. “It’s not as easy as simply introducing 20mph limits. There’s a lot of red tape and consultation to go through. “We do take road safety extremely seriously and if anyone has any concerns about a particular area then there’s a range of measures we can look to adopt.” Some of the areas the Tele visited included Harestane Road, Perth Road, Strathmartine Road, Old Glamis Road and St Leonard Place.

Residents said they wanted to see speed bumps and other traffic calming measures introduced to clamp down on the problem.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Road safety continues to remain a priority for Tayside Division and officers regularly conduct patrols in Dundee and carry out operations to target those who commit road traffic offences.

“That includes focusing on offences such as speeding, drink or drug-driving and using a mobile phone.

“Officers will continue to take action to improve road safety and ask that anyone who has concerns about other road users reports it to us.”
