ROUND-UP Warning isn’t taken as ’Hill held to a draw
GROVE Menzieshill hockey men retained third spot in National Division One with a 2-2 draw against leaders Grange at DISC.
Gavin Byers gave Menzieshill the lead in the first minute and Paul Martin netted at the start of the second half.
From then, it was an uphill battle for Grange.
However, a late surge provided their first goal five minutes from full time.
That should have been sufficient warning for Menzieshill but they conceded again with the last hit of the match to take one point when three should have been taken.
Menzieshill must be disappointed to have let a twogoal lead slip in the last five minutes against Grange but should be encouraged by their performance.
Grange still lead the way but Kelburne, with their narrow win over Clydesdale, are a couple of points closer.
Menzieshill remain third and that position was boosted by Uddingston’s 6-3 win over fourth-placed Western Wildcats.
Harris picked up their first point of the season against St Andrews University at DISC.
Josh Lee opened the scoring for the students and added a second to put the match, apparently, beyond Harris.
However, Harris stuck to the task and were rewarded when Greg Whittet netted their first.
Steven Moir scored a late equaliser to earn the Dundee side a well merited first point.
St Andrews remain i n mid-table.
Menzieshill II recorded a 4-2 win over Clydesdale II at Stirling. Ben Cromar, Guy Rowson, Hamish Rice and Agris Fagerson netted.
Grove Menzieshill face another real test on Saturday against a Kelburne team which is nearest to Grange at the top of the First Division.
Kelburne’s 2-1 win over Clydesdale does not show the Paisley side to be on top form, so three points could well be gained.
The prospect of moving up to second in the table must excite Menzieshill even though Grange must surely remain on top after an expected good win over Hillhead.
Perthshire should be very confident of another three points away to Stepps to stay third in Division Two.
However, they are most likely still adrift of Watsonians and Gordonians. Similarly on Sunday, they should be too good for St Andrews University who must be going through a transitional phase.
For Harris, the encouragement of winning their first point against St Andrews University was vital, raising hopes they can do the same or better at Granite City Wanderers.
Such is the situation Harris are in they need all their more experienced players available. Sadly, that is not always the case.
Menzieshill II’s 4-2 win over highly-placed Clydesdale II was a boost to their confidence and their ability to move clear of the relegation zone i n Central Division One.
However, they must repeat that sort of result and who better to face on Saturday than bottom team Uddingston II.
Wanderers II have come to terms with the level of performance required i n Central Two after a slow start to the season.
Three points from the visit of Falkirk II might even propel them into third place but still well behind leaders Inverleith II.
A potentially more difficult test awaits on Sunday away to similarly-placed Glasgow University II.
However, these are the games and results which will define their season.
