Firefighters used battering rams and breathing equipment as they smashed down the door of the burning property in Clepington Road on Saturday.

One man was treated at t he scene and neighbours had to be evacuated.

The blaze broke out in the property at around 2am.

Firefighters evacuated nearby flats and used thermal imaging equipment seeking anyone trapped inside the building.

One neighbour described the scenes of panic as firefighters smashed down the door of one of the properties.

Frank Ogston, 58, said he was woken by the sirens at around 2am.

“I looked out the window and there were three fire engines, two ambulances and police in the street,” he said.

“I watched as they took their hoses round to the back of the building.

“There was a lot of dense smoke and you could see flashes of flames.”

Another witness said: “Residents were wakened by police and firefighters around 2am.

“There was smoke and flames pouring out of the flat along from mine.

“I watched as firefighters used a battering ram to break down the door.”

Police confirmed the flat was unoccupied and that the cause of the blaze is not being treated as suspicious.

However, the fire service also confirmed it is still investigating how it started.

The property is connected to a row of terraced houses next door to a parade of shops. The houses have been converted into around 10 flats.

A HUGE fire gutted a ground floor flat, forcing nearby residents to flee in terror in the early hours.
