‘Firms won’t lose out through new parking charges’

and they can also park for free if they’re using electric cars.

“It’s not that we are anti-cars, we’re anti-pollution.

“These emissions targets have to be met by 2020 and this is a way that we can work towards that.”

The changes to the multi-storeys comes as the council looks to implement residents’ parking permits in three areas of the city.

West End, Coldside and Maryfield residents may soon be charged £62 to park near their home in a bid to stop people parking on the outskirts of the city centre.

Park and ride facilities at locations around the outskirts of Dundee were previously said to be crucial to reducing air pollution in the city.

Previous proposals, however, were thrown out by councillors.

But Ms Short said that a park and ride scheme could still be implemented.

She added: “Park and ride is still very much on the table as is a range of options that we are looking to explore.

“That maybe is an option long-term but when it did come to council before the planning committee it didn’t have the support.

“I wonder, for example, if people will come to Carnoustie and take part in a park and ride scheme or whether they’ll take advantage of the public transport already on offer.

“We have a better public transport service now and I don’t know whether or not it would have the full support.”
