Plaques for Davie

Fundraiser in memory of music-loving Fintry man

- BY CIARAN SHANKS

PLAQUES have been unveiled in two city pubs in memory of a Fintry man.

Davie Low, 59, battled cancer for 30 years before his death in November.

A special Northern Soul evening was organised in his memory, as well as to raise money for charity.

Two plaques emblazoned with his name and the Northern Soul logo were purchased from the £800 raised on the night, and now take pride of place in the Powrie and Dolphin Bars in Fintry, where Davie was a regular.

A donation is also to be made to the Maggie’s Centre with plans for a memorial bench.

Davie was first diagnosed with throat cancer aged 28 and he had encountered numerous health difficulties from birth, having been born with a tumour in his stomach.

He underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which impacted on his ability to swallow. In later life he developed lung cancer and had surgery to remove part of his lung.

But his family and friends say his health troubles never stopped him enjoying life and he was a regular at the Fairfield Social Club soul nights alongside childhood friend Paul Williamson. Paul, who organised Davie’s tribute night, said: “It really was a fantastic night. We had a great turnout and we raised more than £800 on the night.

“Before that the family had raised about £250 for Maggie’s.

“Everyone had a great time and it was probably the best way Davie could have been remembered. He absolutely loved his music.

“The plaques cost about £130 each and they’ve got the Northern Soul logo on them. They look brilliant.

“He was a regular in the Powrie and the Dolphin so it seemed like the best place to have them on show.

Paul added: “I had known Davie since we were bairns. I was 14 when I first met him. I’ve done a lot of these nights for years and even though Davie was ill for quite a while he still kept coming along.

“He had throat cancer for about 20-odd years but it didn’t stop him from doing things and he was there right until the end.”
