Broughty made to work for the points

- BY JUNICUS

BROUGHTY Athletic beat the conditions and their effort was worth it after seeing off Kennoway 4-2 to make it two Super League wins in a row for new boss Jamie McCunnie.

The home success wasn’t quite as straightforward as the score suggests, however.

The Fifers created a good number of chances and the Fed had keeper Chris McPherson to thank for keeping them at bay.

Kennoway made the brighter start with McPherson bringing off some fine saves and it was probably slightly against the run of play when Chris Liversedge gave Broughty the lead in 25 minutes.

In 37 minutes the hosts doubled their advantage courtesy of a Jamie Winter penalty after he was pulled down.

The visitors were still in the game, though, and pulled one back through a Matty Gay penalty in 57 minutes.

Broughty extended their lead to two goals again in 70 minutes when Brian Clark strolled through the Fife defence and fired home.

Kennoway wouldn’t be shaken off, however, and Gay again reduced the deficit after lobbing McPherson. However, the points were sealed when Jordan Garden netted Broughty’s fourth late on.

Fed manager McCunnie has again been busy on the transfer front and has signed former Dundee FC player Taylor Berry.

Bottom-of-the-table Forfar West End were edged out by Penicuik i n a hard-fought encounter on a difficult Strathmore Park pitch.

It finished 1-0 in the visitors’ favour to take the Lothian side to the top of the table.

Andy Forbes’ terrific 30-yard strike after 58 minutes was a goal worthy of winning any game but it was tough on a West End side who played so well.

Both sides finished the game with 10 men, Ross McDonald of West End and Penicuik’s Jack Hamilton seeing red.

Short-handed Jeanfield Swifts were hit for six by Sauchie on a barely-playable Beechwood Park.

Lochee United’s home game against Broxburn was postponed with 0vernight rain rendering Thomson Park unplayable.
