Bookmakers take another hiding from the punters

-

ALTIOR and Samcro helped punters score a major victory in the battle with bookmakers on day two of the Cheltenham Festival.

Considered two of the banker bets of the entire meeting, the pair obliged in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle respectively.

Trained by Nicky Henderson, Altior returned at a generous-looking even money, with Gordon Elliott’s Samcro coming home first priced at the 8-11 favourite. Samcro was one of three winners on the day for Elliott, the others being Tiger Roll and Veneer Of Charm.

Presenting Percy, the 5-2 favourite in the RSA Insurance Novices’ Chase, was another painful blow for the layers.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “Apple’s Jade saved our bacon by failing to win on Tuesday and we were hoping Altior would do the same yesterday.

“It was not to be and punters’ pockets will be bulging going into day three of the Festival.”

Ladbrokes described events as a “bloodbath”, estimating a cost to the industry of £20 million.

Spokesperson Nicola McGeady said: “We couldn’t have had a worse day with the t hree horses we were desperate to get beaten romping home.

“It was Altior and Samcro who did the most damage.

“Between them, they have cost the betting industry an estimated £20 million.”

Betfred also bemoaned a damaging day.

Spokesman Matt Hulmes said “It’s been a bloodbath for us bookies.

“However, there are 14 races to go, so let’s just hope it’s a game of two halves.”
