£6,900 for new mural
Community funding for Kirkton creative project
The wall behind Asda will be transformed after £6,900 was given to the Kirkton Community and Safety Partnership Group.
The project will be led by local artist Pamie Bennett who has experience in painting, prints, hosting creative workshops and mural designs.
There used to be a mural in the same spot which was really popular with the local community, but it was defaced.
Lynn Watson, chairwoman of the group, said: “The aim of the mural project is to get the folk of Kirkton to share ideas- and brighten up the place.
“Pamie is fantastic at getting people involved. From our first meeting, ideas have snowballed and we now have a long list of additional projects we really want to do.”
Lynn told how Pamie has been busy with consultations with various community groups, the local schools, at Asda and chatting to residents in neighbouring houses.
The mural will also involve the artists who worked on the “Open Close” doors project involving local people. Lynn added: “Everybody’s really excited about it.”
The grant came from Dundee Partnership and will cover the total cost of all the consultations and community engagement, and materials and artists to complete the mural. Lynn hopes more similar projects can be featured in the next round of Dundee Decides, which allows residents to vote for things they want to see improved in their community. Any leftover art will be used in other community projects.
Councillor Kevin Keenan said: “It’s great they have got the money to do it up.
“Hopefully it will give it a modern feel.”
