Spoony eyes up Qatar World Cup

-

ST JOHNSTONE midfield man David Wotherspoon feels playing at the Qatar Wo r l d C u p F i n a l s for Canada in four years time is “do-able”.

By that time, the former Perth High School pupil will be 32 but Canadian head coach John Herdman has told the former Celtic and Hibs player if he shows up well he could be i n the finals squad.

“It’s a long way away but it is an exciting prospect and a do-able one,” said David, speaking from the Canadian i nternational side’s training camp i n Murcia, Spain.

“Spoony” qualifies for the country thanks to his Winnipeg-born mum Sheila and he is with the squad this week in preparation for their friendly against New Zealand in Spain on Saturday.

David has never been to Canada before so could end up playing for a country he has never visited.

“However, I hope to go t h e r e o n e d a y,” h e commented during a break from working out with his national team-mates.

David revealed a chat w i t h B u r n l ey ’s former Falkirk ace Scott Arfield made him realise he was available for Canada.

Like Arfield, the Saints player has turned out for Scotland at U/21 level and, now like Arfield, he has taken the chance to pledge his full international allegiance to the country.

“I filled in all the forms I needed to and now have clearance to play,” he went on.

“I saw Canada play against Scotland at Easter Road last year and felt they were very competent on the ball.

“They did well in that 1-1 draw and were unlucky not to win.

“Now I am part of the Canada squad and hoping to get my first cap on Saturday.”
