American flavour for city’s nightlife

- By CIARAN SHANKS

RETRO gamers and pool sharks are the target for a new bar opening in the city.

The former Weavers Tavern in Princes Street is in the midst of a makeover ahead of a revamp as a North American-style sports bar.

Mark Smith has taken over the venue, now known as The Dungeon, which will feature numerous arcade machines and pool tables, serve food and host gigs for up-and-coming bands.

He previously held regular hip-hop events at the bar and the new venture is Mark’s first foray into the licensed trade.

Mark believes he can bring something unique to Dundee’s nightlife.

He told the Tele: “It’s going to be a sports bar and arcade and we’re going to be working with a lot of local graffiti artists on the building itself.

“It’s going to be quite unique and we’ve got our grand opening planned for May.

“Last year I did quite a lot of hiphop nights there and it was my friend that actually owned the pub.

“But now I’ve decided to take it on myself. I don’t have any experience in this area but we’ve managed to get things together.”

The Weavers was once a firm favourite for Dundonians and underwent a refurb in 2015.

It had strong sporting connections having previously sponsored two local football clubs — Elmwood Junior Football Club and Coldside AFC.

Prior to being named the Weavers, it was previously known as The Diving Bell.

Despite Dundee’s licenced trade being through a difficult spell, Mark says The Dungeon can stand out from other boozers in the city.

He said: “I definitely think there’s a gap in the market especially with the arcade games. There’s not too many places like that.

“Dundee’s definitely moving in the right direction but I think this is something that’s going to be different.

“People are looking for an alternative to hang out rather than just go out and get drunk.”

Mark added: “From my experience being over in America and Canada, we’re looking to bring a North American feel to Dundee.

“There’s not enough uniqueness in the scene. That’s why I think we can make this a success if we’re offering something different to people.

“I’d quite like to give bands their first start too especially since I’ve done my own music nights in the past.

“Hopefully we can do well once things are up and running.”
