Cops found drugs after car stopped

- BY STEVEN RAE

A WOULD-be drugs peddler was found to have cannabis in his possession worth thousands of pounds after police stopped a car on a routine traffic matter.

Aaron McLeod, of Balmoral Gardens, Dryburgh, was due to stand trial at Dundee Sheriff Court, charged with being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug.

However, the 23-year-old admitted a lesser charge of being in possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

McLeod changed his plea before his trial was due to commence — having been caught with more than 170 grammes of the Class B drug in a vehicle in a city street.

He will be sentenced by Sheriff George Way at the court next month.

Fiscal depute Marie Irvine told the court: “Around 9.10pm on November 28, officers in a mobile patrol vehicle noticed the vehicle the accused was in had a defective brake light.

“The officers followed and signalled for the vehicle to stop.

“One of the officers spoke to the driver and advised him about the light not working.

“At that point, the officers detected a strong smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle.

“There were two passengers in the car, with the accused in the rear of the vehicle.

“The accused grew increasingly nervous, asking why he couldn’t leave the locus.

“He was advised it was because there was a strong smell of cannabis in the vehicle.

“He then handed over a clear plastic zip-lock bag with herbal cannabis inside it.

“The other two occupants were searched, and at that point the accused produced another four zip-lock bags, which also had herbal cannabis inside them.

“The total recovered was 173.3g, and according to the police stop report, had a potential street value of between £1,730 and £2,595.”

McLeod admitted that on November 28 last year, in Dudhope Terrace, he was in possession of cannabis, a Class B drug, with intent to supply.

Sheriff George Way said: “This amended charge says you weren’t concerned in the supply of cannabis, but were in possession with intent to supply — do you accept that?”.

The accused confirmed that this was the case.

Sentence was deferred until April 23 for a criminal justice social work report and restriction of liberty order to be prepared. In the interim, McLeod’s bail was continued.
