Dens boss takes pride in Hendry’s Scots debut

DUNDEE boss Neil McCann was proud to see Jack Hendry make his Scotland debut in the 1-0 win over Hungary on Tuesday night.

The 22-year-old left Dens Park for Celtic on a four-and-a-half year deal at the end of January having been signed last summer from Wigan, following loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and MK Dons.

Hendry was one of seven changes made by boss Alex McLeish for the friendly in Budapest and he played in a back three along with skipper Charlie Mulgrew and 21-year-old Aberdeen stopper Scott McKenna, who was winning only his second cap.

McCann watched Hendry with some pride and predicted a long international future for the defender.

He said: “He has only been at Celtic a couple of months but we gave him the opportunity to come here and show his undoubted talent.

“I took a great deal of pride watching him, not only performing but the way he performed. The club should be proud as well.

“I thought he cruised it and I think him and young Scott McKenna in particular were stand-outs and they could be good news for Scotland going forward.

“Alex played a three at the back and it could be his way going forward. If you are going to play like that you need boys who are comfortable in possession because you want to build from the back.

“You want to be good defenders but you want to be quick and capable of going into wide areas and Jack and young McKenna were comfortable.

“Should they be used as a two, I wouldn’t have any fears because both are very quick, big strapping boys who can play, left-footed, right-footed so it is a lovely balance.”
