Council told to clean up act over West End street

DUNDEE City Council is being urged to act over the piles of rubbish being dumped in a West End street.

Seabraes Lane, off Perth Road, has seen a large increase of waste being left, leaving bins overflowing.

Now residents are calling for something to be done about the mess.

Simon Pekala, kitchen manager at the Braes pub, said: “It’s been recurring at that bit. There is a problem with the lack of recycling bins.

“I have noticed a lot of people in the flats are using some of the recycling bins that the restaurants have.

“Early in the morning there are flocks of gulls all over the area.

“There are a lot of problems with the bin collections around Dundee.

“I have already reported it to the council. I do feel a bit like a bin crusader. “It’s a potential health hazard. “The rubbish is also a potential risk for fires. It’s slightly concerning.”

Councillor Fraser Macpherson said: “Having requested a clean up of the area on March 6, which was done, it is pretty disappointing to see what a mess it has become again.

“This time, not only have I requested a clean up of the area, I have also requested a change to the bin collection arrangement.

“I think a communal bin system would work better, given the multiple flats in the block in the lane.

“I have had a number of complaints in recent weeks about the mess of rubbish and litter in Seabraes Lane and have been in touch with both street cleaning management and also staff dealing with bin collections to get the area cleaned up and maintained in a tidy way in the future.”

Peter Menzies, chairman of the West End Community Council, said: “We are aware of this.

“It’s a severe issue and these things need to be dealt with.”

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “These bins will be emptied as soon as possible and litter in the area will be picked up.”
