Officers were called to an address in Balmerino, Fife, after a man claiming to run RSS Car Sales based in West Pitkerro Industrial Estate was said to have tricked Fife wood worker Owen Pilgrim.

Owen, 40, said he advertised his 2002 Mitsubishi L200 Animal pickup on Gumtree last month and a man claiming to be a representative of RSS Car Sales purchased the vehicle on March 24, paying £2,500 by cheque.

Owen said the man presented a business bank card and other documentation before leaving with the vehicle.

He said: “As soon as he mentioned paying by cheque I was reluctant to accept payment.

“He said he had a small business called RSS Car Sales based in West Pitkerro Industrial Estate.

“He showed me the company business bank card and identification and explained he’d recently moved address so his driving licence was sent away to get updated.

“He said the cheques he’d used had been scammed before, so he used a cheque guarantee scheme to protect himself and his customers.”

Owen said the man left with the vehicle on March 24 but he had doubts about the dealer the following day.

He said: “I woke up early that day and I immediately started to think something wasn’t right.

“I looked back at the identification he’d electronically sent me.

“I realised the picture on the ID had been taken on the bus he’d come on to see the vehicle on the day before.

“I started looking for details of RSS Car Sales and I couldn’t find anything
