Prepare for ‘heavy snow’ across Tayside and Fife

-

FORECASTERS have told folk to prepare for heavy snow across Tayside and Fife tonight after issuing a yellow warning.

A weather system was moving into the UK from the south today, mingling with cold air to cause wintry showers across the country.

A yellow warning for parts of Tayside and Fife came into force early today, set to last until 11.45pm. Higher ground above 200metres was expected to be worst affected, with conditions potentially having an impact on travel.

The snow is expected to be accompanied by “drifting in strong winds”.

The Met Office said there was a “slight chance” that some rural communities could end up cut off, and that power cuts could take place.

A statement from the forecaster said: “As a weather system moves in from the south and comes up against cold air over the UK, there is the chance that rain could turn to heavy snow in places.

“Several centimetres of snow are possible, mainly over ground above around 200m (656ft), with drifting in strong winds.

“There is also the possibility of a few centimetres of wet snow gathering locally at lower levels.

“The snow is likely to be affecting the southern part of the warning area in the early part of today and to reach Scotland later in the day.

“Meanwhile, snow is likely to gradually turn to rain across Wales and central England.

“At present the extent and amounts of any snow remain uncertain. Although it may not be too disruptive, there is a small chance that snowfall could lead to problems.”

The region has already been hit by snow on several occasions this winter — though rumours of a third Beast from the East storm, following on from the extreme wintry weather in February, were dispelled last week.
