Saints are aiming to finish the best of the rest

-

ST JOHNSTONE have resigned themselves to finishing in the Premiership bottom six following their 4-1 away loss to Aberdeen.

However, manager Tommy Wright insists he wants his team to finish the best of the rest as he has earmarked a seventh-place finish.

He said: “We are disappointed at not being in the top six again.

“Aberdeen are the only team who have dominated us in a season which has been frustrating for me as we have made too many individual errors.

“It was the same again on Saturday. I went up there thinking we could win and, for the opeining 35 minutes, I thought we were the better side.

“However, we then gift them two goals and we should deal with the third one better.

“Mistakes have hammered us all season.

“I felt 4-1 flattered Aberdeen but mistakes have again cost us dearly.

“The league has been stronger this season but I honestly felt we could get into the top six. However, it was not to be.”

Saints have finished top six in the previous half dozen seasons and they have already started making plans to try to get there next season.

Aberdeen’s opening goal came while Denny Johnstone was receiving treatment for a facial injury and injuries have meant Saints couldn’t field their strongest side in quite a lot of games this season.

Wright added: “I could use that as an excuse for losing the goal but I won’t because we should deal with it.

“Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes highlighted the poor pitch and we picked the team with that in mind. Up until their first goal we edged it but then came the mistakes.”
