Scholesy hoping debut single hits the target

Now Callum Rennet, known by his stage name Scholesy, is preparing to release his debut single at a special launch event in Dundee.

It will mark the latest chapter in a brief but blossoming musical career, which has already seen him play his first gig at the final T in the Park in 2016.

Callum, 23, will release debut single Nights on Friday, before performing at the launch event at Assai Records in Broughty Ferry on Saturday.

“It should be a really good night,” said Callum.

“It will showcase alternative music in Dundee. There’s not a lot of stuff like that in the city at the minute.”

Callum’s moniker is a reference to Manchester United legend and fellow redhead Paul Scholes.

“I used to work at the Olympia, and on my first day of work, straight away I was called Scholesy,” said Callum, who graduated from Abertay University last year and now works at an animation studio in the city.

Nights was produced by Cameron Gower Poole, who has worked with superstars including Kylie Minogue, Dua Lipa, Anne-Marie and The 1975.

“It was great working with him,” said Callum. “It’s brilliant to have the support of someone who is at that next level.”

Callum, from Newport, has also been signed to Xray Touring, which stages shows for bands such as Snow Patrol and Coldplay.

“They have lots of really good acts that are in the same genre as me,” he said.

Callum started out in indie bands before ditching guitars in favour of an electronic sound.

He credits Kanye West, Frank Ocean and James Blake as being among his biggest influences.

“I try to combine hip hop infused beats and instruments with my own vocals, which are a bit more conventional and pop influenced,” he said.

“I try to write about two or three songs a week. It’s what I do for fun.”

Callum’s manager Paul Grieve said: “Assai has been a great supporter of new music and it’s great it is showcasing the new music in the city.

“Scholesy was brought to my attention when he performed at T in the Park. I was blown away by his voice and original style.

“He is a great talent and good fun to work with.”

The gig at Assai Records on Saturday starts at 4pm and entrance is free.

Scholesy will also perform at Door Below in Perth Road on April 14.

Tickets are £8 and are available at gigsinscotland.com/scholesy.

LESS than two years ago, he was working as a lifeguard at the Olympia leisure centre.
