Gowfers aiming to boost survival bid

- BY JUNICUS

CARNOUSTIE face a crucial Super League match against Newtongrange at Laing Park tomorrow in what is the proverbial six-pointer.

Due to postponements and results elsewhere, the Gowfers have slipped into the bottom three and it’s vital they start picking up points, particularly against the sides round about them.

Newtongrange sit two places above them, four points ahead, but, crucially, have played four games more, so a win for Alan McSkimming’s side would be a massive boost to their confidence. Carnoustie have a full pool available. Lochee United head for Fife to play Dundonald.

It will be the Thomson Park side’s final competitive game before heading into their big Scottish Cup semi-final double header against Auchinleck.

After last week’s solid performance against Broxburn, Lochee will be confident of bagging another victory.

Manager George Shields will take nothing for granted but, having already beaten the Fifers 3-1 when they met at Thomson Park, he has good reason to be optimistic.

Shields will be without Logan Davie and Kevin Buchan.

Broughty Athletic manager Jamie McCunnie was frustrated with last week’s 3-3 draw with Hill of Beath and felt it was two points dropped after leading 3-1 with 10 minutes to go.

Ahead of tomorrow’s trip to face Camelon, he said: “I can’t fault the lads for effort but it was really disappointing to let the lead slip, particularly the penalty from which they equalised in injury time.”

Bottom-of-the-table Forfar West End entertain Bo’ness, whose convincing 5-1 win over Jeanfield Swifts last week eased their relegation worries.

West End expect to have a squad of 15/16 as they look to reverse the 1-0 defeat they suffered in the first meeting.

Jeanfield have another tough away assignment, this time against Linlithgow.

Swifts, who lost the first meeting 5-2, welcome back Daniel Kelly and Andy Mackenzie in a squad of 18.
