‘Overwhelming’ support for city’s fashion week

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

ORGANISERS of Dundee’s first ever fashion week have been “overwhelmed” by the level of support they have received, as final preparations are made for the launch event.

Unveiled in January, Dundee Fashion Week is now just under a month away.

Fashion Week founder Alexandra Harnett said that exhibitors, bloggers and sponsors will be part of the launch event, which will be held in the Counting House reception area of DC Thomson’s Meadowside office on May 7.

Alexandra said filming for the upcoming Style in the City documentary had taken place in the Overgate on Sunday and will be screened on May 12.

She said: “Filming has gone really well. Ironstar Films spoke to people across a range of ages.

“We had stereotypical fashionable people, people who were elegant in their own styles and people who didn’t adhere to trends.

“It was interesting to see what Dundee people’s influences were, their backgrounds and the reasons for their fashion choices.”

The show will close with a traditional catwalk at Caird Hall on May 13.

The catwalk finale will promote independent and small businesses as well as emerging designersfrom Duncan of Jordanstone College.

Alexandra said there are a number of great events throughout the week, including Style in the City and Fashion Anyone? at The McManus.

She added: “Style in the City on May 12 will be the world premiere screening of the footage recorded in the Overgate as well as interviews with celebrities.

“Fashion Anyone? At The McManus will be another great event. “There will be a chance to see some iconic pieces from local designer Samantha McEwan of Isolated Heroes, i ncluding items worn by music artist, Paloma Faith. “The concept behind Fashion Anyone? Is that we hope to inspire people across a whole level of ages and backgrounds. “Whether you are looking to go into business, follow trends or interested in local stories, there is something for everyone.” Information on the events throughout fashion week can be found at dundeefashion week.com.
