Social work talk at The McManus

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

A LEADING social work expert will discuss the future of the profession at next week’s Dundee Arts Cafe.

Dr Trish McCulloch, social work lead at the University of Dundee, will also highlight t he issues faced by both staff and service users against a backdrop of austerity.

She said: “As a society we’re having to realise that many of us are going to need social work and social services as we age.

“People want t o be involved with decisions that i mpact upon them and the task for social work is how we involve people meaningfully within a system that is constrained and affected by cuts.

“That is going to be the challenge and that is what I am keen to talk about.”

Dr McCulloch’s talk — Modern Social Work: Par ticipation i n Risky Spaces — takes place in the McManus Art Gallery and Museum cafe on Tuesday at 6pm.

Entry i s free, though early arrival is advised as places are limited.

John Sime, 47, was discovered at his house on Douglas Road on Monday by police.

Police Scotland are still treating John’s death as “unexplained” following the discovery of his body.

His partner of 14 years, Elaine Allan, 51, who lives in Tayport, said police officers had to come her door to notify her of John’s death.

She said she was still “numb” from the news.

Elaine said: “We had our ups and downs like any other couple, but he was one-in-a-million.

“The police came to my house on Monday evening to tell me what had happened.

“I hadn’t seen John since Wednesday of last week, but we would regularly visit each other, either at his house in Douglas or my house.

“I still feel incredibly numb after being told the news — I can’t believe he is no longer with us.”

John had lived at his Douglas Road address for 10 years.

Former neighbour and friend Peter Stenhouse, 44, described him as a “great guy”.

He said: “We used to go in and out of one another’s houses.

“He never had a bad bone in his body.

“One of my friends who still lives in the area said there were police standing outside his door.

“I was told he had died. He was a great guy that has tragically been taken too soon.

“John had a dog Bailey and I had offered to take it in the meantime, but the dog is now living with Elaine.”

John had attended Kirkton High School.

A MECHANIC found dead at his Dundee home has been described as “one-in-amillion”.
