Car blaze outside Lidl supermarket

- BY ADAM HILL

FIRE crews were called to tackle a car “engulfed” in flames outside a busy Dundee supermarket.

The blaze took hold at Lidl South Road, in the Lochee area, yesterday around 6pm. Witnesses told of seeing the car covered in flames – with “lots of smoke” – and firefighters battling to extinguish it.

One passerby, who asked not to be named, said she saw the fire crews.

She said: “I was going past Lidl and I saw the fire engine going into the car park — that is when I saw the car on fire.

“The firefighters were right on top of it putting the fire out.

“There were quite a lot of people about, it was at tea time.

“It could have been a lot worse — the car could have blown up.

“They managed to get the fire out but the car was totally gutted. “The police were there too.” A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed they had attended the incident.

She said: “We were called to attend a car fire at Lidl car park on South Road, Dundee.

“There was one car, which was well alight, on our arrival.

“A fire engine from Macalpine Road attended and one hose reel jet was used to extinguish the fire.

“We received the call at 6.11pm and we stood down from the scene at 6.27pm.”

The spokeswoman said they had notified police of the incident. Police were contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of going to press.

The car fire at Lidl came after police were called to nearby road traffic incident on Harefield Road, during rush hour.

A witness said: “The accident was causing quite a bit of disruption at a busy time.

“It was j ust before the Woodlea Children’s Centre and traffic was noseto-tail all the way back to the Coupar Angus Road.

“Cars were just able to get past but had to mount the kerb.

“I drove past again after 6pm and there was a Ninewells Garage truck recovering it.

“The road in the direction of the Stack Leisure Park was completely closed off.”
