Another big weekend of finals in the DDYFA
YOUTH football returns to the City of Discovery on Sunday as Carnoustie Panmure U/13 take on Ferry Athletic in the Diamond Jubilee Cup Final, while Monifieth Athletic face Dryburgh CC U/16 in the final of the Chuck McGowan Cup.
Ferry were victorious when they met Carnoustie in October, and Carnoustie boss Gary Hamilton knows his side will be in for another tough test in the final.
He said: “In our previous game against Ferry we didn’t play particularly well and Ferry ran out deserved winners. There is no doubt they are an excellent team with lots of good players.
“They are sitting at the top end of the league and reached the quarter-finals of Scottish Cup, so we will have to play better than we did in our league game against them if we are to have a chance.”
Ferry manager Paul Riley is expecting a close affair between the two sides.
He said: “Carnoustie are a team we know very well and they know us well as we have played a number of friendlies with them over the years.
“They are good football team who, like us, want to get the ball on the ground and pass. Like all cup finals, they will be very motivated for the occasion and I expect a cracking game of football involving two very good teams.”
Monifieth U/16 were on the wrong end of last year’s J Bolton Cup Final and boss Dougie MacKinnon says they want to put that right this season.
He said: “They tasted the disappointment of losing a final and they didn’t like it. For sure, they’ve used that to spur on their success this season.”
There has been little between the sides on their two previous meetings with a 4-4 draw on the opening day of the season before Monifieth recorded a 1-0 win in December.
MacKinnon added: “Dryburgh have been the best side we’ve faced this season and I mean no disrespect to the other sides.”
Dryburgh boss Ian Grant knows there is little between the teams.
He said: “Both games were very equal. In the first game we were 3-0 down then came back to 3-3 — a goal apiece later was a fair result. The second game also was tight, but we just couldn’t put away our chances.”
