Belief won’t says Dundee

- BY GEORGE CRAN

DUNDEE midfielder Lewis Spence insists belief has never wavered at Dens Park this season, even when times were bad, and he has no doubt they’ll keep themselves out of trouble.

The Dark Blues get their final survival push under way this Saturday at home to St Johnstone and Spence is backing them to finish the season off on a high — and, in the process, stay in the Premiership.

He said: “We’ve always had belief in ourselves, even when results weren’t going our way.

“We always feel we are a really good team on our day but consistency has killed us this season.

“We proved at Celtic the other week we can be a top, top team but it’s about proving that every week. “We believe we can beat anybody. “We’re not out of trouble yet but we feel, as a group, we shouldn’t be down there.

“We are, but we think we have enough to stay up and have a good end to the season.

“With five games to go we’ve got the two teams below us, Partick and Ross County, breathing down our necks and Hamilton around us.

“It’s going to be a really tough end to the campaign but I think we’ve got more than enough to stay up.”

Spence recently put pen to paper on a new t wo-year contract after impressing manager Neil McCann in his debut season with the club.

The 22-year-old was snapped up from Dunfermline last summer and has featured 18 times for the first team this campaign.

That’s despite a lengthy period out in the middle of the season after ankle surgery.

Spence, though, is now fully fit and showed up well recently at both Celtic Park and Ibrox in the middle of the Dundee engine room.

And he’s relieved to finally get his contract signed after talks began with the club way back in January.

He said: “It took a wee bit of time but I’m delighted to get it over the line and commit my future for the next couple of years.

“Hopefully, I can kick on now and prove what I can really do here and be part of a successful club.

“It gives me a bit of security and I can now concentrate totally on my football.
