‘This could be fatal’
Pictures circulated of urban explorers in former hospital
Images have been circulated on social media showing young “urban explorers” i nside Strathmartine Hospital.
The former medical facility has been targeted by fireraisers on multiple occasions since it was permanently closed in 2003.
However, as well as becoming a target for vandals, the complex has attracted the attention of urban explorers keen to look around the abandoned buildings.
Councillor Craig Fotheringham, who represents the Monifieth and Sidlaw ward, said he feared that someone would be killed if the craze continued.
He said: “At that age, these people know right from wrong. People need to keep away from the place — there will be a fatality if this goes on.”
Mr Fotheringham said he would liaise with council officials — fearing a repeat of the tragic death of a 13-yearold boy who fell while playing at nearby Baldovan House in 2002.
He added: “I will be going to council officials and asking what the current situation is with the development.
“I will also be asking what is being done to prevent people accessing the site.
“Things are going from bad to worse and, if it goes on like this, someone will lose their life.
“I know that steps were taken in the past with fences being put up and areas of the site completely blocked off.
“As councillor for the area, I will be looking for answers on the position on the site and the security issues.”
The issue was previously raised by Strathmartine Hospital conservation campaigner Karen McAulay who called for the developer to bolster security at the site. She also expressed fears that someone would lose their life at the former hospital.
Mr Fotheringham urged the developer to make good on its promise of renovating the buildings.
He said: “This has gone on long enough — they should either develop the property or sell it on to someone who will.”
The site is being marketed for sale by developer Muir Smith Evans as it is “too much” for the current owners Heathfield Ltd to take on.
A year ago, the firm told the Tele it was engaging with planning officers to secure the long-term future of the site.
Muir Smith Evans was contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of going to press. Our
