Adding local colour
The new mural, which has replaced the previous artwork after it was defaced, features the slogan “Kirkton is our Kingdom” and celebrates local and Scottish culture.
Among the new images are the V&A, a bottle of Irn-Bru, thistles, fresh fruits, the Trottick Ponds and Oor Wullie.
The project has been led by local artist Pamie Bennett, who said the aim of the new wall art was to ensure the community bought into it so there was less chance of it being defaced.
“I’ve been pulling nine-hour shifts every day since Friday to get it finished,” she said.
“We consulted with about 300 people on this, holding consultations on the design in Asda to get people’s thoughts on it. have been painted on to it with the help of stencils.
In addition, a number of local artists have made their own contributions.
They include Adam Milroy, who has created a breathtaking depiction of the V&A, and Sinead Logie, who created a newspaper-inspired design.
Pamie said: “We’ve had all ages involved. It has been a massive, proper project.
“I’m proud of it — so happy with the outcome of our engagement.
“I wanted the process to be right so people really buy into it. That was as important as deciding the design for the wall.”
Several passing locals gave nods of approval to the work as the finishing touches were being applied.
One man who was out walking his dog said: “It’s absolutely brilliant.
“I’ve been living here for 36 years and I think the people doing this are doing a wonderful job.
“I just hope that the kids who live here keep it nice.”
WORK on a colourful new mural for the community in Kirkton is almost complete after days of hard graft by artists and schoolkids.
