Superb treble for the Comets

-

FIFE Ice Arena hosted the seniors Scottish Cup Final between Dundee Comets and Paisley Pirates.

And this cup win for the Comets meant a clean sweep of all competitions has given them the treble.

The opening 10 minutes saw Comets’ keeper Matthew Michie make several world class saves.

John Gordon got the goal that put Comets in front and Adam McNicoll made it 2-0.

Cam McGiffin then made it 3-0.

Frustrations were running high at the start of the third period and further penalties saw more five on four chances for both sides go unrewarded, due in no small part to both goalies.

With 11 minutes left, Pirates’ Chris Turley momentarily gave some hope as he pulled one back but player-coach John Dolan scored to restore the three-goal gap two minutes later.

Pirates netted another consolation through former Comet Richard Thorp.

DUNDEE Stars U/14 also travelled to Fife Ice Arena to take part in the Scottish Cup Final and returned victorious after beating Kirkcaldy Chiefs.

They remain unbeaten for over a year.

After four minutes of period two, Dundee broke the deadlock when Ben Brown fired home.

Luca De Simone made it two then Rio Page netted for 3-0.

In the third period, the young Stars bombarded the Fife goal and De Simone netted his second followed one minute later by another goal for Page. He then completed his hat-trick.

A Stars management spokesperson said: “After a slow start the team were excellent and scored great goals.

“We had boys just back from injuries and they did well — and that included goaltender Liam Griffin.”

Stars now face Young Belfast Giants on Sunday in Dundee (2.30pm).
