Don’t get cocky or ’Well will strike back

-

DUNDEE’S victory over St Johnstone was perfectly timed and showed plenty of character but they must heed Han Solo’s warning — don’t get cocky.

That’s because this week’s opponents, Motherwell, are a completely different animal to St Johnstone.

Saints are a team limping to the finishing line, looking forward to the season just being over while the Steelmen are flying like the Millenium Falcon towards a Scottish Cup Final.

They’re also a team Dundee haven’t beaten this season in four attempts while the Dark Blues have held a bit of a Jedi mind-trick over the Perth side.

I am keen, though, not to rain on the Dens Park parade after Saturday’s win.

Covering the Dundee United game down at Palmerston, I’ve had to make do with just watching the highlights but the big thing for me is how they bounced back from the disappointment of losing the goal.

And it was good to see Sofien Moussa get a wee bit of luck in front of goal with the first one — earlier in the season that would have hit the post and bounced out so maybe his fortunes are changing.

They conceded a poor goal with minutes to go but refused to let that bother them by grabbing the winner through the big Tunisian again.

That should give them a new hope going into the final four games.

They should beware over-confidence this week, though.

That’s exactly the kind of thing Motherwell feed on — they are a team that tests every side they play with their physical style, as a team they are a rogue one.

The last time the two sides met at Fir Park, though, should give Dundee a boost because they certainly should have won down there.

And they are in good form with good displays against Hearts and Celtic and decent spells in the following defeat at Ibrox leading up to the win over Saints.

Keep feeding the Moose and that might continue in Lanarkshire with his new-found goalscoring form.

What they can’t do, though, is get ahead of themselves before the job of survival is done well and truly.

Six points off bottom isn’t totally safe but you’ve got to fancy Dundee have enough about them to get the points they need to be playing Premiership football next year.
