‘Conman’ strikes again

Driver says she was targeted after putting her BMW on sale

- BY JaMES SIMPSON

Cynthia Rotibi, 46, from Coldside, received a call from a representative of RSS Car Sales — believed to be a fake company — wanting to buy her BMW 320i ES after it was advertised on Gumtree.

The man then tried to dupe Cynthia by paying £1,500 by cheque.

She said: “I advertised the car on Wednesday and within an hour, a representative from RSS Car Sales contacted me.

“I was told he was based at a scrapyard in Perth. I only moved to the area recently so he could have told me anything.”

The man agreed to meet Cynthia at a friend’s address in Dundee.

She said: “He offered to pay by a cheque guarantee system and said he wanted to take the car that day.

“I told him he wouldn’t be getting the vehicle until the cheque cleared.”

After the man left, Cynthia did some research online and found a story about RSS Car Sales in the Tele earlier this month.

Balmerino resident Owen Pilgrim previously told how a representative of the firm had conned him out of thousands of pounds after taking his vehicle.

Cynthia said after reading Owen’s story, she investigated the matter further.

“I took the cheque to the Bank of Scotland branch on Clepington Road — they told me it was washed out after looking at it under UV light,” she added.

“I contacted the RSS Car Sales staff member and met him before saying we should go to the bank to get it sorted.

‘‘He went to his vehicle and said he’d meet me at the bank but he did not appear and ignored my calls.

“The police visited me last night to get more details. I’m disgusted — I was nearly conned out of my vehicle.”

RSS Car Sales had not responded to a request for comment at the time of going to press.

A “CONMAN” who left a motorist thousands of pounds out of pocket has struck for the second time in a month.
