City’s warm reception for feel-good initiative

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

The #SunnyDundee initiative, which kicked off last month, has gained the endorsement of thousands of Dundonians as they gear up for one of the most hotly anticipated summers in the city’s history.

Presenters Andy and Erin, from Wave FM’s breakfast show, have also been getting in on the act, making their way around Dundee to get photos with locals as part of the light-hearted scheme.

Jennifer Caswell, campaign manager for Dundee — One City, Many Discoveries, said First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and former SNP leader Alex Salmond were among those backing the campaign.

She said: “The response has been overwhelming so far — it’s been a sea of yellow shades across the city. We’ve had people taking snaps in Singapore and at New York Tartan Week wearing #SunnyDundee glasses.

“We launched the campaign last month and we’ve already had requests from other businesses to get involved.

“Companies including Michelin and Duncan And Todd Opticians have made sure their staff have an opportunity to get a pair.”

As well as highlighting a bright year ahead for Dundee, the campaign is supporting the cancer care centre Maggie’s Dundee.

Those picking up a pair of the yellow framed eyewear are asked to donate £1 to the charity.

Jennifer added: “Not only have we had a great response to #SunnyDundee, the level of donations has been incredible. “We’ve already had calls from businesses i ncluding Dundee Contemporary Arts saying the charity box was full and it needed replaced. “This is another shining example of how people are embracing #SunnyDundee. “We don’t have an exact figure for how much we are looking to raise for Maggie’s but this is certainly a great start, to hear charity boxes are needing replaced.” Whether or not Mother Nature plays her part, Jennifer believes an “exciting summer” lies ahead for the campaign — and hopes l ocals can help spread the word by taking their sunnies overseas. She said: “The hope is that as people go on holiday, the

glasses will go across the world. A great knock-on effect to this is that people have been uploading so many great pictures of them wearing their shades.

“Whether it’s Twitter, Instagram or Facebook people have been tagging us in beautiful pictures of Dundee.”

Jennifer added: “We’ve got a really exciting summer ahead with some top artists playing at Slessor Gardens including Steps, Rita Ora and Simple Minds.

“We’ve already dispensed thousands of glasses and we are anticipating we will need more to cope with the demand.

“The weather by and large has played its part so far — we just hope the sun will continue to shine on Dundee and we can enjoy a great summer.

“We hope people will have an opportunity to wear the sunglasses in Dundee or further afield.

“We are looking forward to getting #SunnyDundee trending throughout the summer.” Our
