Saints at the double in dramatic cup final ties

- BY ANDREW CREEGAN

IT WAS a historic few days for St Andrews Colts as they ended their 24-year trophy drought by clinching an U/14 Mac Brown and U/17s J Cord Cup double.

Gary McDermott and Harry Martin had St Andrews U/14 two to the good on Sunday but Joe Wallace pulled one back for Maryfield late on.

Harry Paul put St Andrews 3-1 up but there was enough time remaining for Innes Urquhart to pull back another goal. However, it wasn’t enough as Saints clinched the cup with a 3-2 win.

Boss Graham Nicoll said: “There’s not much between the teams and I think that was the fairest result. Over the game we were the better side and scored three very good goals.”

On Tuesday night, St Andrews Colts U/17 completed the most astonishing comeback of recent years, as they fought back from 4-0 down to beat Carnoustie Panmure 4-3 on penalties.

Vincent Edmonds netted a hattrick for the Bodycare Complimentary Clinics League leaders and Shaun Roeleveld also scored to put them 4-0 up.

However, the league’s bottom side produced a stunning late show after Lewis Birrell pulled one back on the hour mark.

Birrell scored twice in the last 10 minutes with Matthew Cuffley heading home three minutes from time to level the tie before goalkeeper Lyall Constable came up with the goods in the shootout, as Saints ran out 4-3 winners.

Manager Stuart McLaren said: “The boys have shocked me, it’s the first time they’ve come back in a game all season!

“It’s my last season with this lot, so it’s the icing on the cake for me and my team.”

East Craigie Swifts U/17s saw off Ferry Athletic 4-3 to clinch the Steven Ellwood Memorial Trophy.

Matt Mckinnon opened the scoring early on before Hayden Burr headed past his own keeper to bring Ferry level.

Burr soon made amends with a first-half double that put East Craigie in the driving seat. Aiden McIrvine netted East Craigie’s fourth in between a double from Ferry’s Cameron Murray.

Manager Steve Fallon said: “We just try and play good football and win every game we play. The boys are competing on all fronts and, hopefully, they can get over the line on all of them.”
