Resident gives notice to addicts at his door

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

A HILLTOWN resident has taken direct action to stop drug users knocking on his door by creating a sign telling them he is “no drug dealer”.

Mateusz Ziewiec, 21, has lived in Hilltown Court for just over a month, and in that time has had repeated calls from people looking for a female who had reportedly dealt drugs from the address.

Mateusz said he became fed-up with the whole situation before creating an A4 sign telling would-be callers he wasn not the person in question and stating he was not a drug dealer.

And it seems like people are finally getting the message.

Mateusz, a factory cleaner, said: “Since I put the sign up I’ve had no issues whatsoever.

“People were coming to the door and they were always asking for the same person, telling me she was a drug dealer.

“I got a bit fed-up and decided to put the sign on the front door.

“The whole experience hasn’t put me off living here and at no point did I contact the police regarding it.

“I’ve only lived in Dundee for about six weeks in total.

“I don’t really know too much about the issues Dundee is facing with drugs.”

Coldside councillor Anne Rendall said she was “pleased” to hear the unusual method had proved to be a success.

She said: “It isn’t something I have been made aware of.

“If problems were to persist this would be a matter for the police to deal with.

“I’m pleased to hear this approach has worked for the tenants in tackling the problem.” Mateusz Ziewiec became fed-up of people coming to his door looking for drugs. Ourvoice The Tele revealed last week that a shocking 72 people had died of drugs-related deaths in the city in the past year. The leader of Dundee City Council, John Alexander (pictured) previously said there was no “magic bullet” i n tackling drug-related problems. He added: “We don’t see recovery (from addiction) enough – it exists and we need to listen to those who are recovering. “I don’t think there is an expectation we’ll come up with 40 recommendations and fix it with a click of our fingers. “It’s a worldwide issue, but there are ways we can try to shift towards prevention.” PAGE 16
