Narrow wins see Ferry and Monifieth lift cups

GOALS from Brandon Donnelly and Ewan Stewart clinched the John Clark Motors Cup for Ferry Athletic U/16 as they came from behind to beat Broughty United 2-1.

Manager Jamie McGrath was delighted with the character his side showed to win the match.

“I thought we deserved it in the end. In the first half we couldn’t get near them but in the second half we dominated and could have scored a few more,” he said.

“We’ve done that quite a few times this season. They’re never beaten, we keep telling them that if they keep going they’ll get something out of the game.”

Broughty opened the scoring after 22 minutes when Callum Howe’s cross-cum-shot caught out Ferry keeper Connor Milton and drifted into the net.

His opposite number Gregor Tweed was in fine form as he kept Ferry at bay but was finally beaten by Donnelly just before the hour mark. The midfielder was fouled in the penalty box by Harry Eaton and made no mistake with the resulting penalty.

Five minutes later, Louie Porter released Stewart who slipped the ball under Tweed to score what proved to be the winning goal.

GREG Will and Aiden Lorente scored for Monifieth Athletic U/15, who clinched the Jean Pierre Babin Trophy with a 2-1 win over Pitfour.

Manager Andy McCafferty was delighted to see his players repeat their earlier success after a gruelling month of fixtures.

He said: “There wasn’t much in the game but we deserved to win. The boys showed great determination to get the win.

“Pitfour have had the same schedule as we have so I think both teams are suffering from the number of games over the last four weeks but you’ve just got to get through it. Luckily, we’ve got a great squad and the boys have been brilliant.”

Will opened the scoring from the penalty spot 10 minutes after half-time before Lorente capitalised on an error by Pitfour keeper Jake Edwards.

Ally Alcorn halved the deficit with a curling finish late on but it wasn’t enough for Pitfour.

These sides will meet once more in a potential winner-takesall match for the league title and McCafferty hopes his side can go on to complete the treble.
