Child trapped in bicycle wheel in freak accident
EMERGENCY services were called to a Dundee street after a bizarre incident in which a child’s leg became trapped in a bicycle wheel today.
The i ncident took place at Berwick Drive in the Whitfield area of the city at around 8am.
Witnesses described seeing lots of police in the area and a girl lying on the road, just a short distance from Braeview Academy.
It is understood the girl is a pupil at the school.
The incident took place as youngsters were arriving at Braeview for the start of the school day.
Fire crews were called to the scene and used cutting gear to free the child from the wheel.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said one fire appliance from the Kingsway East fire station had been called out, following reports of a female child whose leg had become stuck on a bicycle wheel.
The spokeswoman added: “We released her leg from the bicycle using small gear.
“Her leg became trapped between the frame and the wheel. An ambulance was also in attendance.”
One witness said: “I got a fright at first because you obviously think the worst when you see anything like that.”
A spokeswoman for Braeview Academy said: “We are aware of the incident and will be providing support to the pupil.”
Councillor Brian Gordon, who represents the area said he was upset to hear that a child had been in such distress.
He said he believed the girl was surrounded by children at the time of the incident.
Mr Gordon said: “It’s always upsetting to hear a child has required help from the emergency services.
“I hope this hasn’t been too serious an incident and that her injuries are minimal.
“It must have been very upsetting for her nonetheless.
“Thanks to the quick thinking of the fire officers who were called to attend the incident, it seems she was released rapidly and without too much harm.
“I understand she was also attended to by the ambulance service.”
