Efforts to tackle rats

Eurobins being considered amid problems with vermin

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

The Tele reported this week how bins had been left overflowing on Seabraes Lane, with locals spotting “massive” rats nearby.

Pizza boxes and sanitary products were among the items found spilling out of wheelie bins.

Councillor Fraser Macpherson, who represents the West End ward, said there had been issues with rubbish on the street for months.

And despite the council’s rapid response team being called out three times, the problems persist.

Mr Macpherson said: “It’s fine getting it cleaned up, but we need a longterm solution as the current wheelie bin scheme isn’t working.

“I know there have been complaints not only from tenants but also members of the public. They’ve used the footpath near to the Vision building and labelled it an eyesore.

“At the moment, I’m aware that environmental services are looking at the viability of getting a bin lorry down there to access a Eurobin.”

The councillor added: “I don’t think it would be fair to expect tenants to cart rubbish back up the lane.

“The Eurobins would seem the most viable solution to accommodate the volume of waste.

“As well as this I would ask the tenants to try to ensure they are doing as much as they can to present their rubbish responsibly to deter vermin.”

A Dundee City Council spokeswoman said: “Eurobins are under consideration for the area.”

Eurobins, which provide larger, communal containers for areas with large numbers of people living in them – such as tenements – were at the centre of complaints last summer after delays in their rollout, meaning many residents had to wait weeks for their rubbish to be collected.

THE council is considering introducing Eurobins to a West End street after huge rubbish pile-ups attracted vermin.
