‘Doggone it’ pooches set for day at cinema

- By JAMES MASSON

It may not quite be 101 Dalmatians but it will be very nearly that at Perth’s Playhouse cinema on June 17.

Dog Friendly In Perthshire has organised a “Pooches At The Playhouse” day when scores of our four-legged canine friends will be treated to a specially arranged screening of the recently released feature film “Isle Of Dogs”.

The movie, directed by Wes Anderson of The Grand Budapest Hotel fame, tells the story of how, by executive decree, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island.

Twelve-year-old Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies across the river in search of his bodyguard dog, Spots.

There, with the assistance of a pack of newly found mongrel friends, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the pets.

The day at the cinema follows on from the successful “Pooches And Prosecco” day at Perth’s Green Room when more than 100 dogs and their owners turned up for the launch of the Dog Friendly Perthshire website.

Katie McCandless-Thomas, who runs the website and also the Missing Pets Perth and Kinross Facebook page, said: “The idea for a day at the cinema came out of the ‘Pooches And Prosecco’ day.

“I am very grateful to Cathy Moran of the Playhouse (pictured right with Katie and Katie’s dog Baxter) for all her assistance in helping organise what looks like being a fantastic day.

“The owners are really looking forward to it and I’m sure they will have a fabulous day as will their dogs.”

This is the first time dogs will be allowed into the Playhouse to watch a film, although dogs are no strangers to the screen at the popular Perth movie theatre.

As well as 101 Dalmatians, Greyfriars Bobby, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Lassie and Lady And The Tramp are among the films about canines that have been screened over the years.

So after a prosecco day and a day at the cinema, what’s next for the pooches?

There’s a Hawaiian Beach Party Day organised at Perth Pet Care on June 24.

It’s a dog’s life isn’t it? Not in Perth.
