Students scoop £3,000 for cancer support charity
A TEAM of seven Dundee pupils has won £3,000 for Tayside Cancer Support.
Grove Academy hosted the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) final this week – with teams delivering talks on local social issues in a bid to win £3,000 from the Wood Foundation and Northwood Charitable Trust.
Seven students representing Tayside Cancer Support took home the prize on the night.
Broughty Ferry councillor Kevin Cordell, one of the event judges, paid tribute to everyone involved.
He said: “I was delighted to be asked to be a judge at Grove’s YPI 2018 final. The aims of the project are for the young people to identify social issues which affect our local area, research them and represent a charity that tries to tackle that particular issue.
“Seven groups delivered seven very different presentations on behalf of their chosen charities, in the hope of securing the funds for them.
“Although the standard was high throughout, in the end it was the team representing Tayside Cancer Support who won.
“However, I am sure that all the charities will benefit from increased awareness of their work after this event.
“To present the cheque to the winning team and to do so to such a confident and creative group was an honour.”
The YPI is an active citizenship programme that aims to raise awareness among young people about philanthropy and their local community.
