Man ran off after cops stopped car
MULTIPLE police units descended on Mid Craigie following a hunt for a man who “ran off” after a vehicle he was in had been pulled over.
The dramatic incident took place on Pitkerro Road yesterday afternoon before a man was traced a short distance away.
Eye-witnesses said more than one occupant had made off on foot from the black Volkswagen Passat during the road policing stop.
As many as three police cars and an off-road police vehicle were at the scene.
Kearney Rodger, 24, who has lived in the area for 18 months, said she was “shocked” by what she saw.
She added: “I think a l ot of the neighbours were out looking to see what happened.
“There were three police cars at the scene that I saw.
“It l ooked like the officers were initially chatting to several guys from the car and the next minute the men were off on foot.
“The whole episode must have lasted for about 30 minutes.
“There were two sniffer dogs searching the car along with police officers.
“It isn’t uncommon to see police on this stretch of road, given it’s a main thoroughfare, but I was shocked to see what had happened.”
Another eyewitness said it appeared to him that some of the police vehicles had attempted to “box” the Passat in.
He added: “There was a lot of police activity along Pitkerro Road yesterday just after noon and they all had their blue flashing lights on.
“I noticed the dog van as well – it certainly appeared the police had made some attempt to box this car in.
“A number of vehicles had to manoeuvre around the police investigation. It was just down from the junction with Kingennie Court.”
A number of officers were pictured at the scene, including a police dog handler, while others wore blue gloves to carry out inspections of the car.
A spokesman for the force said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a man ran off from officers in the Mid Craigie area of Dundee after a car was stopped by road policing unit officers.
“He was traced a short distance away and apprehended.”
